Anne Hathaway can do no wrong. Why, was her acting a miss on it?
I once tried to pigeon-hole you. Slunk away with my tail between my legs. But I get it all the friggin time.
This was a woman who defended a Canadian celebrity charged with assault and sex crimes against willing partners who changed their stories. She knows right from wrong. So get on that, Hollywood, okay?
We see so few good roles for women these days. Reader1 Why not write it yourself? I hope you realize the importance of that distinction, and how much of an impact the difference between those two populations of characters would have on the story.
Us ethnic folk are capable of living typical American lives too, ya know… and those lives are still movie worthy. The fact that they are Chinese, though, changes that because of the reality of the story. The dialogue, behavior, and choices of Chinese men would be starkly different than those of Jon Favreau and Vince Vaughn types.
There is no need for beat-for-beat copies of any movie. We are probably agreeing more than disagreeing. Movies and TV are the lens through which most of the world gets to know Americans. If everything we put out there is about douchey bros, the world is going to think of us as a country of douchey bros.
Which we did, and now they do. Loetzen I bring this up because 9 out of every 10 screenplays in Hollywood are written by white males. I think a lot of white men just enjoy writing and therefore pursue it. But when you read a good script told outside of that point-of-view, it becomes evident just how narrow the white male point of view is.
Most white males enjoy the same things.
Therefore we get the same genres, the same stories, the same characters. The premise of what Carson is going for here is spot on, but the example he gives is at cross-purposes with his point. It would be truer to say that 9 out of 10 screenplays are written by cultural liberals. And yes, cultural liberals are largely white.
But many of the minority writers in Hollywood share this culturally liberal white POV. They often went to the same schools and grew up in the same neighborhoods. A script written by a non-culturally-liberal white man will be far, far different from one penned by a culturally liberal white man than one penned by a culturally liberal black writer or culturally liberal Hispanic writer.
If all these minority writers have the same POV and went to the same schools and grew up in the same neighborhoods, why are there so many more white ones getting the work?
LaughDaily I think like in almost all aspects of American life, we, minority, are having to play catch up after winning civil rights etc. Loetzen If all these minority writers have the same POV and went to the same schools and grew up in the same neighborhoods, why are there so many more white ones getting the work?
That is a deflection and has literally nothing to do with the point that I was making. My point, instead, is that script variety and uniqueness is to be obtained sooner by ideological diversity than by racial diversity, given that racial diversity will usually simply mean a similar brand of culturally liberal script, except penned by a minority writer, having just superficial differences from a script by a culturally liberal white writer.

The main difference is a writer needs to accomplish that feat quicker in a screenplay versus a novel. A typical feature length screenplay is pages whereas a novel could be several hundred pages long. I know the difference between bad, mediocre, good, and great. This screenplay received high praise from my editor, who has outright won her category in two big contests.
Hence her opinion is valid. Extreme Screenwriting: Screenplay Writing Simplified - Kindle edition by Barb Doyon. Download it once and read it on your Kindle device, PC, phones or tablets. If you're talking in terms of a film script versus a screenplay, then there's no difference. A script has many meanings but with regard to scripts for TV and film, there's no difference, they're the same thing.
